How is a delivery manager different from a project manager?
A project manager typically owns a defined project to completion. A delivery manager owns the ongoing flow of work to production across projects — the system rather than a single initiative. In smaller teams the roles overlap considerably.
Do we need one if we already have engineering leads?
Engineering leads own how things get built. Delivery management owns whether the right things are sequenced correctly and land when promised. Leads asked to do both usually deprioritise the second, because the first is more urgent day to day.
What size team justifies this?
